The Alpha Course is a series of interactive sessions that explore the basics of the Christian faith. No pressure. No follow up. No charge.
Typically, Alpha runs for around ten sessions on Saturday afternoons and includes food, a short talk and an open discussion for participants to ask questions and share thoughts. Alpha is for anyone curious enough to learn about the Christian faith and who Jesus Christ is. The talks are designed to encourage debate and exploration of the basics of Christianity in a friendly, honest and informal environment.
Stay tuned for Alpha dates in 2018! But first, read what an Alpha graduate in 2017 has to say about her experience:
The Alpha course opened my eyes to who Jesus really is. As each class progressed, I felt an eagerness to learn and know about Jesus more. By the fourth class, I recited the sinner’s prayer, accepted Jesus into my life and felt overwhelming joy, peace and strength inside me. I remember shouting with joy that I am now a child of God and had the best nights’ sleep! Reading the Bible was a bit scary but the encouragement and support from Alpha committee members really helped and from the Bible, I was comforted that God will not give us more than we can handle. This verse really helped me through the ups and downs of my life.
How did I end up in Alpha?
I first heard about the Alpha course from my sister-in-law but I was not interested. I felt that my own judgment and self-effort were enough for my life. However, when my daughter became a Christian first, my husband and I did not object.
Life has not been easy because my 17-year-old son was born with a chromosome disorder and has special needs. He isn’t able to speak or care for himself independently. His dependency has been quite an obstacle for our family, even though our love for him knows no bounds.
Tragedy struck in May 2016. My husband fell ill and died unexpectedly. He had always been a healthy man and hardly ever fell sick. It started with a fever in April and while we thought it might be dengue, the blood test was negative. He became weaker and weaker by the day. Three weeks after his fever started, he had breathing difficuties and we rushed him to the hospital. From an X-ray, we learnt that his left lung had collapsed. He was on a ventilator for two weeks before passing away.
The shock, numbness, denial, extreme sadness and fear of life without my soul mate were indescribable. He was the love of my life, my best friend, the live wire, the strong, capable and talented one, the “Jack of all traits”. He was our family chef and we held parties in our home just to be able to share his cooking with close friends. I had lost the foundation and backbone of my family.
This was the state I was in when a concerned neighbour brought me to the Alpha course in Septemer 2016.
Since accepting Christ, I have felt miraculous differences in my life. Where I used to be worried, anxious and easily stressed out, I now know John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give you. I do not give you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid”.
Knowing Jesus has given me inner peace, strength and confidence to be a single parent with a special needs child and to make decisions by myself for the family. I am always assured that Jesus is by my side and I call on him in my emotional and difficult moments with just a prayer. By the Grace of God, I also see my son growing stronger and healthier than before and I am longing to see greater improvement in his life because I believe that God has a plan for him.
All thanks, glory and praise to the one and only God and savior, Jesus Christ.
